Do we still need journalists anymore?

Wow! One might think that these question is being biased. When we look back from the previous time journalists used to gather and generate newsworthy stories and news that are of interests to their public and get paid for that, but now things have changed. Technology has changed everything, and people can now get news without Waiting for the media to broadcast first.

Anyone can now be a citizen journalist

You might ask yourself a question  what I mean when I say technology changed everything? well I  am talking about the transformation of technology, has allowed ordinary people to do jobs that journalist have to go through training and  get qualifications.

From my experience when I first heard about the story of school girls that have been kicknaped in Nigeria, I saw it in the news, I did not get to understand what was going on or maybe because of the time that the news was broadcasted or the way it was being broadcasted. Some of the details were left out. Until I saw the pictures and videos on Facebook that’s when I got to understand what was exactly going on, I had a lot of time as I wanted to view the videos and look at the pictures. Since that day I asked myself if ever we still need journalists anymore. And also since it was broadcast in the news and print media, we were not updated on what is going and as a results the story was no longer new to the media and the people.

This days we are living in a world where everything is being influenced by social media, if I may ask, do you pay more attention when you’re listening to news on radio, television or even when you are reading the long report on newspapers the way you do when you are reading it on your social network relaxing? I doubt because I don’t do so also. With social media everyone can now be a citizen journalist because people no longer wait for the news to come to them but they make news for themselves easy and fast on less costs and without any consumption of time I can post, share and tag any news.

Journalism vs. technology transformation

It has been known that journalists “investigate and report events, issues and trends to a broad public”. http://goo.gl/YacX9m. Technology has diluted the profession of journalism where by we end up not knowing exactly what it is that the profession offers that cannot be offered by anyone,  as a results it is affecting it in a bad way , were by we see people with their smartphones end up being citizen journalists . Adding more, with the technology transformation in platforms such as twitter, Facebook and YouTube it has made news to travel fast and easy, it has also made the field of journalism easy too.see more information on the following links. http://goo.gl/RBqbcu     http://goo.gl/lLXSPu   .Any comments are welcome.

  1. The thing is with social media is that it immediate while traditional it sort of "late"! With the world moving to digital media, I think journalist need to find the balance between the two, also traditional media still helps us to make sense of the news we read and hear!

  2. yes Nomfundo I agree with what your saying in order for journalists to be in the same level with both traditional and social media is to balance the two and support traditional media as well so that it does not get forgotten.

  3. Do we truly still need journalists yes we do but they need to adapt to the changing media landscapes.Even though citizen journalism is taking over, we need journalists because through them reporting the news has more ethical value then a free for all jungle that citizen journalism is causing.

  6. Social Media is taking over Journalism, because people are always on their phones and in social media sites, so it is easy for them to have conversations with each other about news, they do not have to just take what journalists say and not have a platform to respond or share their views.

  9. I agree with what strategic thinker is saying if journalists have a relationship with the citizen journalists is going to be easy to get news, stories even events that of interest to public because if a citizen journalists are also the source of the information is going to be easy for the audiences to believe since is from someone they know and close to.

  10. I honestly believe that we still need Journalist because Journalists are there to verify news and also do factual research and are therefore still relevant.Social media will never take the place of Journalism because Social media in most cases is used to engage with followers and will not provide in-depth research as compared to Journalism...

  11. What Dazzling Dee is is also true because even if we have social media but we still need journalists to verify and research news.

  12. Social Media is taking over journalism, it is just a matter of time before the journalism career loses value. It might still be relevant in the television context but otherwise, it is not a must to have anymore.

  13. Journalism is not a skill that anyone can buy in a shop. Owning a smartphone doesn't qualify you to be a journo. Journalism has its own language that it uses to influence people think the way they want them to. Online media is expensive compare to buying a news paper in the form of a hard-copy. Online media will co-exist with print media for a long time, because events just don't occur at a civilized environment, Journalist travel the most dangerous places like the places where there are civil wars of which an ordinary person have no guts to go to.

  15. There is no doubt that social media is taking over journalism but one thing we have to know is that for you to have a qualification in that field that means you have enough skills that will make you stand out when compared to ordinary people therefore we still need them since they provide us with in depth information which is written in a style that appeals us and also arouse our emotions. This cannot be done by anyone
